Andrea Wiggins' Life

As a PhD Candidate studying Information Science & Technology at Syracuse University's iSchool, most of my life currently revolves around research. My academic background includes a Master of Science in Information from the University of Michigan School of Information (2007) and a BA in Mathematics from Alma College (2000).

In addition to my academic pursuits, I engage in the design and craft of both digital and tangible objects; my creative efforts focus on photography and fiber arts. I also enjoy international travel and spending time with my husband Everett. You can find me online under the handle AniKarenina, a combination of my nickname (Ani) and the title of my favorite book (Tolstoy's Anna Karenina).

Photography is one of my passions, and I own over a dozen film cameras plus two digital cameras. I particularly enjoy lo-fi and vintage film cameras, and have a small collection of working 16mm subminiature models. My work has appeared in the New York Times and in several international technology magazines, as well as in juried exhibits.

I learned how to knit at the public library when I was about 8 years old, which means that I've been knitting for over two decades now. I prefer to make functional objects such as garments, and I do a little handspinning with a drop spindle as well. The design work of choosing materials and customizing patterns is an interesting and rewarding challenge.
